Rash of break-ins hits neighborhood

At least seven cars were broken into in the area of Heritage Hills Subdivision near Elizabeth and Williams Lake Roads during the late night, early morning hours of Oct. 7 and Oct. 8.

According to the report, all but one of the cars had been locked. Lt. Don Nankervis said six of the cars had windows broken out and items taken - something that's very rare.

"Usually the people breaking in try to be as quiet as possible, it's highly unusual to have so many broken out windows," he said.

Overall, in addition to the damage to the vehicles, more than $5,000 in items were taken. Items taken include purses, wallets, computers and other electronics.

Man jumps into lake to escape police

Police were called to a home on the 9000 block of Cedar Island Road in White Lake on Oct. 8 for a disturbance.

According to the report, prior to the officers' arrival on the scene the suspect in the disturbance left the home and headed north on Round Lake Road in a 1993 GMC truck.

Officers located the car traveling on Southeastern Boulevard. When officers attemtped to stop the truck, the driver took off through several Cedar Crest subdivision roads before stopping on Lakeview Drive, the report states.

When the truck stopped, the driver, the report states, got out of the car and jumped into Cedar Island Lake.

Police Chief Ed Harris said officers attempted to locate the man in the water, but were unsuccessful.

The White Lake Fire Department and the Oakland County Sheriff's Dive Team were called in to check the water after police found items of the man's clothes. Nankervis said there was some concern that the man might not have made it across the lake.

According to the report, police were called later that night to a home on Burgess Court, and the man from earlier, a 23-year-old White Lake resident, was located. The man was arrested at the home on charges of fleeing and eluding, and for operating a vehicle while impaired.

The man is currently being lodged at Oakland County Jail and will likely be arraigned on charges Wednesday.
