Highland Residents Report Hearing Loud Explosions

Several residents have inquired about two loud explosion sounds that happened Thursday night. Officials with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Substation said they received calls and investigated the area, but did not find the source of the booms.

Did you hear two loud booms Thursday night along Duck Lake Road near Wardlow? You're not alone. Several Highland residents have reported hearing the same sounds Thursday at 8:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Det. Jim Bowie with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Substation in Highland said the women that clean the station reported hearing the booms, and that there was at least one call last night following the sounds.

"We had a patrol go out and respond, they said they talked to several neighbors who all heard the noise, but no one could pinpoint where the noise came from and no one saw anything," Bowie said.

The deputies checked the area near Seven Harbors, where the caller lives, and the areas along Duck Lake Road but did not find anything that would have given off that kind of sound.

Leah McPhearson, who lives in the area, said her entire neighborhood off Wardlow heard the sounds, "it shook our house and woke people up."

Some residents on the White Lake-Highland Patch Facebook page said the noises reminded them of a home explosion that happened in Highland in the early 1980's.

"Last time that happened a friends house had blown up," Kathleen Culpert Kirchner, said. " It was in Highland years ago. (We) thought a car hit our house. They lived over a mile away too."

We heard this as well. We live just off of White Lake. Duck Lake Rd and Jackson. Thought it was hunters but it sounded more like "booms" than "bang".

I heard the same thing that night. 2 loud explosions but silence after each one had occurred. Maybe it was a sonic boom? Fireworks? or someone started a bonfire with gasoline? who knows. Never heard the sounds after that night.

Saturday night around 9:30 pm heard squalling of tires and heard the vehicle hit something. Sounded like 2 cars hit each other or an animal hit a car, but it was pretty loud. My husband got in the car to see if anything or anyone got hurt and couldn't see anything. It was pretty dark out. Just putting this information out there in case something did happen.

I just wrote it off thinking they were those M80's from Fourth of July. I heard them Thursday night at White Lake Rd. and Ormond Rd.

I heard it Friday night. Shook the whole house. I think it was around 10pm. That was the only one we heard.

Perhaps there is a "Hunger Game" going on in the area and the number of players has decreased?

Those don't sound like what I heard Friday night. It was more of just a loud boom, like cannon fire or something. Not sure what those noises are in the videos.

Hey Ray
Listened to your youtube video you posted about the weird sounds. Very interesting and never heard about that report before, but the ones heard in the Highland area were loud booms, like Dawn said in comments ( M80). Might have to contact Bill Nye the science guy on those strange noises in the videos. =) Like to get his comment on that. peace...

I live right at N. Duck Lake Rd. and Wardlow Road. I heard it and thought it was an M80 also. I never gave it another thought after that..... Now I'm curious, I'd like to continue following this story.
