The Huron Valley Optimist Club welcomed Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson on Wednesday morning. Brooks was the guest speaker at the Optimist Club’s weekly meeting at in White Lake.
He highlighted the programs he has fostered that make a difference for kids. For example, the “Count Your Steps” program involves third and fourth graders in Oakland County Schools who walk each day during recess.
More than 28,000 students were involved in the 11th year of this key program that fights childhood obesity.
Brooks said he was very proud to share that students are also learning Mandarin Chinese in 27 school districts in the county, soon to include Huron Valley Schools.
Brooks also announced that the Brooksie Way half marathon enters its fourth year this fall. At the event, kids and families can enjoy a one-mile family walk, or a 5K run in addition to the half marathon.
Brooks said he is also excited about the number of students involved in the Oakland County Competitive Robotics Association.
