Man Arrested on 5th Drunken Driving Charge in White Lake

The following information was supplied by White Lake Township police. Arrests and charges do not indicate convictions.

A 42-year-old Waterford resident was arrested Feb. 19 on a charge of operating while under the influence (OWI), third offense, after being stopped by White Lake Police on Williams Lake Road.

According to the report, the man had three prior OWI convictions and had charges pending from a January OWI arrest - making this is fifth arrest on OWI charges.

The report states police pulled the man over after he was viewed, by officers, swerving in and out of his lane while driving a gold Saturn.

When police got to the car, they could smell the odor of intoxicants and noted an open beer can in the vehicle, the report said.

The man gave police a DI177, which, Chief Ed Harris said, is a temporary driving permit given out in OWI cases. This permit had been issued to the man following his January arrest in Holly.

The man failed his field sobriety tests, and registered a .16 blood alcohol level, the report states. The legal limit is .08.

The man was arrested and refused a formal preliminary breath test at the station. A warrant was given for a blood draw, the report states, and the man was released after he sobered up pending the results of the test.

The incident remains under investigation.

What bus? Our part of town specifically refuses to participate in SMART. But, point well-taken, Rog. This guy obviously has a "problem" and continues to make bad choices. Let's hope he can get the help he needs to tame that demon before another someone ends up being an innocent victim of yet another drunk driver.

WHAT! 5 times that's just insane. Why is this happening? Need to get him off the roads judges. He's out there driving around looking to destroy someone's life and family. This is not a good example of our drinking and driving laws.

"How it happens" unfortunately is that there is no e.g. card reader on every car to have you swipe your driver's license before the car will be allowed to start. All of the driver license suspensions and revocations in the world won't stop someone from driving if that someone lacks the conscience to abide by the terms of his/her suspension/revocation.
