The weather on Saturday was perfect for Sparks in the Park, which drew thousands of people to Milford High School for fun, food, live music, and fireworks.

The community event began at 3 p.m. with a variety of kids activities, including bounce houses and a rock-climbing wall.

The Highland-White Lake Business Association, who hosts the annual event, added a new "Market Avenue" this year. These local vendors offered face-painting, jewelry, food products and other mostly handmade products.

Rather than battling fireworks-related traffic jams, many families arrived early with their tents to stay overnight on school grounds for the "Great Campout," and enjoyed pre-fireworks activities at the Huron Valley Pools & Fitness Center. These campers also enjoyed VIP fireworks seating and a Sunday morning breakfast sponsored by Rodnick Chiropractic.

The fireworks were ignited by Chrystal and Derek Vaughn of Milford, who bid on the "right to ignite" auction held by the HBA. The Vaughns and their daughter, Brooklynn, 7, received a tour of the fireworks launching area earlier in the evening, and Brooklynn launched the first bright bursts in the sky.

Tami Flowers, director of the Highland -White Lake Business Association, said she was pleased with the festival's turnout, and appreciated the help of many volunteers and the sponsors. This year's Grand Finale sponsor was LaFontine Nissan.

Other sponsors included: Highland Downtown Development Authority, Colasanti's & Snooks Butcher Shop, Huron Valley Schools, Milford Times, Spinal Column Newsweekly, and Veterinary Care Specialists.
