Talk About Town: Do Unions Hurt the Community's Fiscal Health?

A recent article in the "Detroit Free Press" had us wondering about how our own community is affected by union contracts.

A recent University of Michigan poll found that 56 percent of local Michigan leaders felt that unionized workers have had a negative effect on their community's fiscal health.

The Detroit Free Press ran an article Monday on the findings, including that four out of 10 local leaders said unions have been a liability to their jurisdiction's overall performance.

The survey was based on responses from 360 of an estimated 520 local governments in Michigan that have unionized workers, according to the Free Press article.
