Talk About Town: What Should Happen to Highland Middle School?
The Huron Valley School Board is giving Highland Township the option to purchase the property. Patch wants to hear what you think.
It's got a ton of space, it's a part of Highland history and the current home to the Huron Valley Youth Baseball and Softball League. Vacant now for a year, the former home of Highland Middle School has been offered to Highland Township.
The Huron Valley School board voted last week to allow the township to mull over the decision to buy the property until March. After March, the district can entertain outside offers, or decide to demolish the building and sell the land.
One complaint throughout the process has been that Highland residents have, and continue, to feel burdened by the decision of the school district. The township is now home to two closed schools, Highland Middle School and Apollo Elementary.
So Patch wants to know:
What would like to see happen at Highland Middle School? Should the township purchase the building? Should the building be demolished?

It should be given/sold to the Senior Center to expand the classes...the little room in the current location is just to small and classes are uncomfortable when people are sitting and starting at you. Then the Sr Center can really offer some great programs like Waterford and Hartland. And the other location can house something...maybe a teen center?

REOPEN IT before we lose more students to Hartland schools!! Parents from the north end of the district are sick and tired of their kids being on a bus for an hour every day!!! What are we going to do in 5 years when the economy hopefully comes back and we have a large influx of students??? Build another middle school?? That seems cost effective...

This area really needs a community/early childhood center.The Head Start program and other early childhood programs, could use a permanent home that parents can easily access. it would be awesome if it also housed other programs like a maternal child health branch, teen mom program, community enrichment classes. and other family and community related classes and programs. Some programs could be coordinated with a community action agency like Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency (OLHSA in Pontiac but they serve the whole county and Livingston County), the Health Dept, and other relevant agencies. With this function, it could also host events such as the women's enrichment day, a parent expo, a health fair/expo, weatherization/energy saving classes, cultural events and more.

Use it for our post-secondary population that is currently shoved into a trailer. Horrible. This space could be used for so much more.

Move Technology and Administration out of those card board box portable trailers and stick them in a real building.
