Teens' Excitement for 'Harry Potter' Goes After Hours at Library
Student volunteers and friends gather at the White Lake Township Library to watch a 'Harry Potter' film, discuss their love for the books and make crafts.
Harry Potter was the guest star Friday night at a special after-hours party for teens at the White Lake Township Library.
With the newest Harry Potter movie set to open next week, local teenagers were invited to mingle with friends, watch Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince and make Harry Potter-themed crafts.
White Lake resident Hannah Harte, 15, can't wait for the movie, "I am going to dress as Luna Lovegood, she is one of my favorite characters."
"There were several reasons why we decided to have this event," teen librarian Julie Saunders said. "The Harry Potter series is very popular and the books toward the end of the series are definitely focused more on the teen crowd. My teen board is really into Harry Potter and wanted to have a Harry Potter-themed party after hours. They love being in the library after it is closed."
The teen board is a group of students who volunteer their time at the library.
"We meet once a month," Saunders said. "They help me select books for our book club. If there are certain programs I am not sure I want to do they give me their input and help select the programs. They also volunteer in the summer and help with the children's programs. It's a way to get them to volunteer and help in the community."
Saunders, 32, is also a big fan of the book series. "I think I was in college when they first came out and I really loved them," she said. "And then when the movies came out, and they were good, that just built on my love for the series."
