Walled Lake Northern walloped Lakeland 51-6 on Homecoming to win the battle of Bogie Lake Road. The Knights scored early in the first half after an interception before a large homecoming crowd.
The Eagles had trouble moving the ball in the first quarter, and Walled Lake Northern scored their first touchdown with 6:47 to go. The Eagles blocked the extra point giving the Knights a 6-0 lead. After holding the Eagles to a three-and-out the Knights kicked a 35-yard field goal to take 9-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Walled Lake Northern broke the game open in the second quarter as they scored 21 unanswered points. Eagle quarterback Ross Heiman hooked up a 63-yard pass to split end Beau Whihelm, and Whihelm made a great catch giving the Eagles a first-and-goal at the five yard line with 1:58 to go in the half. However, the Lakeland drive was snuffed out by an interception with 27 seconds left in the half. The Knights took a 30-0 lead into the locker room.
During halftime, senior Megan Schultz was named Homecoming Queen and senior Michael Markley was named Homecoming King.
Lakeland’s offense had trouble sustaining drives in the second half. The Eagles scored their lone touchdown on a nice run by sophomore running back Nolan Johnson with 3:45 left in the fourth quarter.
With the loss, the Eagles finish in a 2nd place tie with Walled Lake Western in the KLAA North division. Lakeland (5-2) looks to clinch a playoff spot next week in a KLAA crossover game either at Grand Blanc, or at Howell.
