Yoga Center for Healthy Living Moves to its Own Beat

Russ White of White Lake brings rhythm and energy to Saturday Vinyasa class once a month.

One Saturday each month, the sound of tribal drumming pulses out of the Yoga Center For Healthy Living, providing a rhythmic backdrop to the flow of morning Vinyasa class.

Russ White, of White Lake, provides the percussive sounds that bring a quiet energy to the session.

The Yoga Center, located at 4437 Old US 23 in Brighton, is a warm, peaceful environment where the art of yoga is taught by experienced instructors. The goal of the center is to “facilitate healing at every level – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually for each individual who walks through its doors.”

Hatha, Vinyasa and Yin are some of the yoga classes offered at the studio.

According to Lee Ann Louis-Prescott, owner of Yoga Center, practicing yoga brings many benefits, including better health and increased physical and mental energy.  Louis-Prescott has been teaching yoga since 1974, and opened up the Yoga Center 10 years ago.

White, who calls himself Peacemaker, has been providing percussion for one Vinyasa class each month for the past four years, according to Louis-Prescott.

“The live drumming adds more energy and rhythm, and is fun for all,” Louis-Prescott said.

Bev Smith, of Brighton, comes to the Vinyasa class every Saturday.

"I love it — it's kind of like dancing. It's all about self-expression," she said.

According to Smith, Louis-Prescott is devoted to the people that come to the Yoga Center to take classes and learn.

"Lee Ann is amazing — she has one of the purest souls. She is so giving," Smith said.

Vinyasa is held every Saturday from 8-9:15 a.m., with one Saturday (usually the third or fourth week of the month) hosting live drumming. The fee for first-time visitors to the class is $5; walk-ins after the initial visit are $15 a class. Buy classes in bulk for cheaper rates. A $5 donation is suggested for the live drumming class.
