Downtown Milford merchants declare class in-session

The sound of school bells and bustling students rings throughout Oakland County, promising a season of transformation and new beginnings. No matter the age, there’s always something new to learn and the Village of Milford provides the perfect opportunity as its merchants release a varied fall line-up of classes.

“Fall is the perfect time to try something new, whether it be a new hobby, a new fitness routine or even a new look,” said Ann Barnette, executive director of Milford’s Downtown Development Authority. “The restaurants, shops and business of downtown Milford have just the expert to help you learn knit, find your inner-yogi, bust a move on the dance floor or even mix things up in the kitchen.”

Dance studios like Suzanne’s Main Street Dance Centre, located at 510 North Main Street, and Milford Dance Academy, located at 131 South Milford Road provide an alternative way to work out, offering a variety of dance classes like tap, ballet, jazz and more. In addition to traditional dance, Suzanne’s Main Street Dance Centre offers Zumba fitness classes from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. every Saturday. The class costs $7.

Crafting is another popular class offering in downtown Milford. The Knitting Circle, located at 400 North Main Street, offers a wide variety of knitting and crocheting classes for students of all ages.

“Many of our classes are open-knitting, allowing any level of a knitter or crocheter to come in and work with an instructor on a project,” said Lynn Hess, owner of The Knitting Circle. “The classes are a fun way to meet new people, learn new techniques and share clever ideas.”

The Knitting Circle also offers classes focused on knitting techniques like how to knit American or Continental, and how to create different designs in garments using color work and shadow knitting. The cost is $11 for one 2-hour class or $50 for five 2-hour classes. In September and October, The Knitting Circle will offer special workshops on specific projects. Participants will learn how to knit a pair of socks during three 2-hour sessions on Saturday, Sept. 14, Saturday, Sept. 28 and Saturday, Oct. 12. The class costs $40, plus materials. Those interested in making their own shawl can join the class that takes place on Saturday, Sept. 21 and Saturday, Oct. 19. A full schedule can be found on The Knitting Circle website.

Cooking classes, offered by Acorn Farm, located at 367 North Main Street, and Demarle at Home, located at 525 North Main Street, are an excellent way to mix things up and learn something new. “Autumn takes center stage in our line-up up fall class schedule, featuring seasonal specialties like deep-fried pumpkin ravioli, tips for tailgating and a special spooky cookie decorating class,” said Karen Pianki of Acorn Farm.

Even salons like Polished Outlook, located at 119 East Washington Street, and Mirror Mirror on the Wall Salon and Spa, located at 546 North Main Street, have caught the class craze, offering private makeup and hair classes. Polished Outlook offers makeup lessons to those looking to update their look and learn new techniques. The lesson includes a consultation to determine goals and discuss current makeup use, assistance in finding the perfect palate to compliment the customer’s skin tone, and step-by-step instruction on proper application and technique. The lesson costs $55.
