Ash Wednesday, celebrated Feb. 13 this year, marks the start of the season of Lent for many Christian denominations.
Lent, which is traditionally observed by fasting, repentance and spiritual discipline, refers to the 40 days prior to Easter, excluding Sundays.
During some Ash Wednesday services, the priest, minister, or layperson will use ashes to make the sign of the cross on worshipers' foreheads. This action is meant to symbolize a person's repentance to God.
In White Lake and Highland you can find services at the following churches:
- St. Patrick, White Lake - Ash Wednesday: 6:30 a.m., 10 a.m., 7 p.m. Masses with ashes.
- Church of the Holy Spirit on Harvey Lake Rd in Highland, 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.
- Highland United Methodist 680 W Livingston, Highland. Ash Wednesday service, 6:30 p.m. All are welcome.
- White Lake Presbyterian Church. M-59 and Ormond at 7:30 p.m.
