Weekend Planner: Costume Sales, Art and a Fire Department Open House

It’s Thursday and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do for the weekend. Don't worry: Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time. Check out our picks for this weekend:

Why go: Help a good cause, and find some great deals at this Mom-2-Mom sale. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Lakeland High School Girls Swim Team. Freedom Work Opportunities, Inc will also be on hand following the show for those sellers who want to donate their items to charity. In addition to the Mom-2-Mom sale, there will a gently used Halloween consignment costume sale.

Why go: Meet your firefighters, see firefighting equipment, watch vehicle extrication demos, enjoy hot dogs, popcorn and goodies, spray water from hoses and participate in 'Palace Patrol' activities (balloon art, basketball).

Why go: On Oct. 8 and 15, Harbor High School will be at the market selling painted pumpkins for the Halloween holiday. Under the direction of their art teacher, Jim Jenkins, the students pick which characters to paint, and then the high school art classes paint the pumpkins with sports logos and cartoon characters. Some of this year’s favorites are Detroit Tigers, Michigan and Michigan State logos, Mickey Mouse, Scooby Doo and Taz. The sales help the students raise money for field trips, art supplies, and other learning activities. Also featured on those days will be pumpkins for carving. You will able to purchase them from Roeske Farms of Hartland. From gourds to large pumpkins, you will have your choice!

Where/when: , Friday at 7 p.m.

Why go: The month of October always brings eerie surprises and spooktacular events.  Did you know that there is a ghost who haunts the Longacre House in Farmington Hills?  They say an unexplainable picture was taken years ago of a ghost gazing out the window of the bride's room. Tonight the Ghost Hunters of Southeastern Michigan will take you on a tour of the historic home looking for evidence of paranormal activity.  You will also learn about ghostly findings from locations around the state. This ghost tour is for those who dare to search out abnormal occurrences and spirits.

Price: $20 residents; $25 non-residents

Where/when: 205 W Livingston Rd, Highland, Friday, 7 p.m.

Why Go: See nationally-recognized, critically-acclaimed photographer Lynn Ann Markarian’s Michigan Inspired fine art photography exhibit. Her exhibit and is available through Oct. 29 at HVCA. Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday as well as from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
