Children's Consignment Store Makes Its Home in White Lake

Rugrat Resale and Consignment opened in November 2012 in White Lake. Since its opening, store owner Katrina Sadowski said business has been great.

For nearly three months business has been growing at Rugrat Resale and Consignment in White Lake.

The new children's consignment business, that opened in November 2012, was started by Highland mother Katrina Sadowski and her family. Sadowski said she got tired of having to drive everywhere to find decently priced items for her young daughter.

"I really saw a need for this type of store in White Lake," Sadowski said. "I was having to drive to places like Novi to find a decent consignment store so I thought why not start one here."

Earlier in 2012, Flowers of the Lakes vacated it's storefront off M-59 and moved across the street, opening up the perfect space for Sadowski.

"It was really important to me to take all the little things I liked about the stores I was going and improve those things for my store," she said. "A lot of times when you go to consignment stores the clothing will have stains and the store itself isn't that clean. You won't find that here. It was very important to me to be able to provide a clean space with top notch items at an affordable price."

So how does consignment work?

Sadowski explained, "Rugrat Resale consigns in-season clothing, toys and equipment. The consignor receives 50 percent of the selling price. If you don't want to keep your kids out of season clothing around until the next year, the store can tag your out-of-season clothing and hold on to it for you until the season arrives.

Sadowski said Rugrat Resale also buys out-of-season holiday items at 30 percent cash, or 40 percent store credit. The total consignment period is 80 days with markdowns on price every 20 days.

"Bringing clothes and items here to consign it a lot easier than the mom-to-mom sales," she said. "You don't need to spend the money to get a table or spend all day at the event, you can simply come in to the store and we will help you get started."

Sadowski said the store has items for newborns and kids up to 10-years-old. Even better, you can bring the kids while you shop. Sadowski has set up a play area in the store to keep children occupied, and often brings her own daughter to the store.

"We've had a great response from the community since we've opened and I'm really happy to be here," she said.

Rugrat Resale is located at 10727 Highland Road in White Lake. The store is open Mondays 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Tuesdays-Saturdays 10 a.m.-7 p.m.
