Tantrum Salon Finds a New Home in White Lake

The longtime Highland Township business, purchased this year by White Lake resident Ann Marie Wolfenbarger, enjoys continued growth.

Moving from neighboring Highland to White Lake may prove very profitable for Tantrum Salon.

The salon has been in business for more than two decades, but a recent ownership change resulted in its relocation to 5951 Highland Rd., next door to Little Caesars and in front of Brooks Elementary School. The new location is just two miles from its old location in Highland.

Since Tantrum Salon reopened June 1 at its new location, visibility has increased, and the number of new clients has risen, according to owner Ann Marie Wolfenbarger.

It can’t be a coincidence, said longtime employee Pam Centers.

“We’re really excited about the move, and we have a lot of (walk-ins),” Centers said. “We’re going to be getting new signage in the next few weeks, so our (salon) name will really pop then."

Tantrum Salon employs nine stylists and two administrative professionals. The salon's services include haircuts and styling, coloring, highlighting, perms, facial waxes and formal hairstyling for men and women of all ages. The salon also offers manicures, permanent eyelashes and more.

Tantrum Salon sells Redken and Big Sexy Hair products and handles extensions for clients. Its stylists range from experienced professionals who have been in the industry for decades to younger stylists.

“I think that's what really sets us apart, is our stylists, because we have something that fits everyone’s need,” Centers said. “If you want a stylist who has years of experience, we have those ladies, and if you are looking for someone younger, we have those (professionals) as well.”

The salon has experienced steady growth during the past year after weathering the impact of the economic downtown that began in 2007, Centers said. In recent months, the service-oriented business has seen an increase in new clients. Wolfenbarger said she senses a slow rebound in the economy and disposable income of local residents.

“That has a big impact on our growth, but we also have very talented stylists, many of whom have worked together for many years,” Centers said. “We really haven’t lost any clients with the move, having come just a couple of miles (east) down the road.”

Through the years, Tantrum Salon has seen a gradual increase in male clients, particularly for such services as hair coloring and highlighting, Centers said.

“I think they are trying to keep up with their wives,” Centers said, laughing.

Tantrum Salon is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesdays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The salon’s website is currently being updated, but appointments can be made by calling 248-887-8338.
