The Root Named Restaurant of the Year

Detroit Free Press names new White Lake eatery top restaurant pick for 2012.

Many White Lake residents had already known about the wonderful cuisine at The Root Restaurant & Bar and now many more in metro Detroit will soon become of aware.

The Detroit Free Press today has named The Root its 2012 Restaurant of the Year.

With an emphasis on modern American cuisine, the Root, located at 340 Town Center Blvd in White Lake, sits in a 4,700-square-foot building in the Village Lakes Shopping Center next to . Its original plans called for 111 interior seats and 28 outside. It serves lunch and dinner and is open every day but Sunday.

The restaurant's chef, James Rigato, described the food as modern American. He also said he wants the atmosphere in the restaurant to have a casual feel.

“We don’t want a restaurant that people are afraid to come in because of the dress code,” Rigato told White Lake Patch a year ago.

White Lake Local Editor Brooke Tajer will be beside herself with this news. She has she's been touting the restaurant's flavorful food, its ambience and friendliness of the chef. She learned about the impending restaurant last spring and couldn't wait for it's grand opening, which she reviewed in June.

And for the record, it was her site of choice for her bridal shower in October 2011.

Expect to see increased traffic along Town Center Boulevard in the upcoming weeks and year.

Sounds good! Restaurant AND Bar? That could be trouble.. ;)
Elaine Owsley February 05, 2012 at 01:28 PM
Got an address? I don't know where the shopping center is.
Brooke Tajer February 05, 2012 at 01:51 PM
I recommend any of the specials they do with mussels... and both my husband and I are big fans of the banana cream pie they've had lately. They also have great drink specials on Mondays and Tuesday... but anyone who wants to go will need reservations on the weekend, especially now. Congrats Chef James, Ed and staff!

This is wonderful! I'm not surprised, though! We have enjoyed many fine meals at the Root. Well done and congrats to Chef James, Ed and staff!

Elaine, the address is 340 Town Center Blvd. The map next to the story will show you exactly where it is. And the first link in the story will give you important details, including restaurant hours.

That' s all fine and well for White Lake but I'm confused why we are reading about it in the Troy Patch. I want to read about Troy things or things in the "close" surrounding area. White Lake isn't even considered close to us.
Teresa Mask (Editor) February 05, 2012 at 02:22 PM
As you know, Chris, we have Patches all around metro Detroit. What we've found from past experiences is that others enjoy checking out restaurants that receive such an honor and will travel across communities to do so. Thanks for the question!
chris murray February 05, 2012 at 02:34 PM
I can appreciate that people like to read about places in surrounding areas but to me that would be Rochester, Lake Orion to the north, Auburn Hills, Royal Oak, Clawson, perhaps Birmingham or Bloomfield. White Lake would not even be on my radar to go just for a meal with today's gas prices.
Michelle Johnston Battice February 05, 2012 at 02:45 PM
You need to get out more Chris! Can't wait to go to White Lake and enjoy a good meal at the Root!
Nancy Hanus February 05, 2012 at 02:47 PM
Chris: You might check out Union Woodshop in Clarkston -- that was last year's winner (http://www.freep.com/article/20110206/ENT08/102060400/) or Forest Grill (http://birmingham.patch.com/listings/forest-grill-restaurant) in Birmingham, which won in 2010. I went to the Union last year for the first time, and it's a gem. I live in Bloomfield, and I just might take the trip to White Lake to check out the Root!

Looks like a great place. I have been up in that area a lot because I have a client up in Highland but have never noticed it. Congrats THE ROOT! Great accomplishment. Thanks for the recommendations Nancy. It is good to hear about new locations to try out. My fav in Livingston County is Stillwater Grill, management is great, food is always delicious and plentiful, the bar does not skimp on drinks, and clean!! I know someone who worked the kitchen years back and the kitchen is inspected regularly and thoroughly cleaned. The only place he says he is totally comfortable and confident in eating. http://www.stillwatergrill.com/

Lol. I have to say, I, like Chris, wondered how a White Lake review made it in the Patch, as most of the things I have been reading were local to my area. But having spent many of my boyhood years on White Lake....I'm kinda anxious to try the Root out. Hmm.......I need to scare myself up a date! =)
chris murray February 05, 2012 at 04:02 PM
Get out plenty Michelle but I can't see burning a tank of gas just to have a meal. I'm a little more conservative with my money - have to be. There's so much nearby that I don't see the need to drive 35-40 miles one way to have a meal.
chris murray February 05, 2012 at 04:05 PM
Recently I thought I would go to the Union Kitchen (the one in the church) with my family for lunch after all the rave reviews. Told there was almost a 2 hour wait. No way. We left and went to the Rusty Bucket and had a great meal. There's no way I will go to have lunch and end up eating it at 3 o'clock in the afternoon.
Mike February 05, 2012 at 04:07 PM
Maybe they should rename the Troy Patch to the "Chris" Patch. Chill out Chris! It's not all about you!
stephanie pytlowanyj February 05, 2012 at 05:52 PM
And how is this "Breaking News" for Fenton, MI ? Seriously guys, what a disappointment.
chris murray February 05, 2012 at 05:54 PM
No Mike wouldn't want you to do that because I'm not that egotistical. Just want to read about local things in the "TROY" Patch since that's what it's called. I got to read the "whole" story about Root in my morning Free Press so you can see why I just didn't see the point. Obviously if one expresses their opinion here they seem to get vilified for expressing their opinion. I guess I will simply keep my comments to myself in the future.
Jason Alexander (Editor) February 05, 2012 at 05:58 PM
Stephanie, I agree. This was not breaking news for Fenton. Sometime we cross-publish stories with our region and this was the case with this story. When editors clicked breaking news for White Lake, it also went out as breaking news in Fenton. Glitch in the system. Things have been quiet in Fenton lately, so carry on. Sorry for the mishap!
Mike February 05, 2012 at 06:49 PM
Thanks Chris! That's mighty nice of you! Like Mom always used to say, "If you can't say anything nice, ........ its probably best left unsaid.
chris murray February 05, 2012 at 11:48 PM
I can only hope your remark about your mother's advice is for you since I said nothing derogatory toward anyone. Simply questioned something and suddenly found myself being attacked. Sad to see how things are going these days.
Mike February 06, 2012 at 12:39 AM
So much for you keeping your comments to yourself...........
Teresa Mask (Editor) February 06, 2012 at 12:47 AM
This is supposed to be an open forum. People are encouraged to offer differing opinions without fear of ridicule. We embrace all the feedback. The personal attacks are unnecessary.
chris murray February 06, 2012 at 01:55 AM
Thank you Teresa. Today is the first time I ever experienced anything like this after asking a simple question. Appreciate your comment.
Mike February 06, 2012 at 03:15 AM
I'm not attacking him......I merely pointed out that Chris is trying to make this whole exchange about himself. He's not taking in consideration that there are people like myself, who live farther away from the restaurant than he does, who are willing to make the trip that he doesn't want to make.
Matt Guarnieri February 06, 2012 at 03:19 AM
I agree with Chris, these comments turned up in the Shelby-Utica Patch...Why? A blog paper that is supposed to be dedicated to local stories of interest keeps running Grosse Pointe, Troy and Dearborn related stories. Maybe a Rochester story or Macomb one on occasion is fine but we can read the regional news on out own.
hartland eagle February 06, 2012 at 03:34 AM
If you're worried about what the gas costs to drive from Troy to White Lake - I'd suspect it's out of your price, anyway...
Mike February 06, 2012 at 03:55 AM
Chris, It just came to me.......What made you think Teresa was referring to you in the first place? Just to put things into perspective........Opinions and advice are best appreciated when asked for. Nobody asked for yours. And you should apologize to Nancy when she was only trying to direct you in the direction you were seeking. Not complain. She didn't deserve that. I apologize if I offended you, I just didn't appreciate you jamming your opinion down my throat.
Mike February 06, 2012 at 04:05 AM
Hey Matt, It may have shown up in your mailbox, and your spam filter may have omitted the attachments, but the alert had "White Lake Patch" written in the header. Perhaps if we all saw it, we may have ignored it......I for one was interested and enjoyed the article. It may not have been a local story, but I for one have been looking for a new restaurant to check out.
chris murray February 06, 2012 at 04:09 AM
First of all I am not male since you referred to me as he in one of your comments above. Second of all I said nothing at all derogatory to Nancy so I really don't know what your issue is here. Last of all I simply asked why this was in the Troy Patch and you seemed to take offense with my question and started an attack on me. I will be unsubscribing to Troy Patch if this is the way a person is treated for asking a simple little question. It's all yours Mike and you don't have to worry because I will no longer ask or comment since I'm done with this online paper because of the way this went.
Teresa Mask (Editor) February 06, 2012 at 04:55 AM
It's really unfortunate that this conversation has turned so drastically away from comments about The Root. I'm turning off comments. Thanks to all who have participated.
