Patch Picks: Staycations

Here are our picks of things to do over spring break, without traveling too far.

Patch Picks: Five great spring break staycations. Money is tight and you have to travel far to get warm, so here are some other options.

  1. Frankenmuth - Why? Germany is too far. Spend a day in Frankenmuth, hit Bronner's, Zehnder's and maybe some shopping in Birch Run on the way home.
  2. - Why? No need to go to France, hang out at this popular establishment all day and grab a specialty coffee, sandwich perhaps later one of their many beers or wines.
  3. - Why? The weather is warming up, take a hike and spend the day outdoors.
  4. The Detroit Zoo - Why? Located in Royal Oak, the Detroit Zoo has a whole host of events and exhibits planned for the spring and summer
  5. Cranbrook Institute of Science - Why? Go birding from 1-4 p.m. April 8. The institute will introduce beginning birders to special daily indoor activities, including learning about bird and beak adaptations, identifying birds using a field guide, binocular instruction and crafts. Special programs include live raptor shows in the auditorium Wednesday and a guided bird walk on April 7.
