Slow-Cooked Pulled Pork

Throw this recipe together the night before for an amazing summer treat.

I love pulled pork.

My dad, Dave, has made pulled pork in the slow cooker for as long as I can remember, and it has always tasted like perfection. When served with potato salad or coleslaw, this dish is the perfect summer dinner. What's even more fantastic is just how easy it is to make.

When my dad makes pulled pork, we eat it for days. It's that delicious. I mean itβ€”I eat pulled pork for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

My dad's recipe varies a little from mine. Instead of water, I use a can of Coca-Cola. My Aunt Ger swears by this recipe, and I have to agree. The pop gives the meat the tiniest hint of flavor and acidity which marries well with the sweetness of the honey barbecue sauce I love to use.

You can use either water or Coca-Cola when you make this. The two are interchangeable, and it really just depends on your preference.

To make this recipe even better, I used a 4-pound pork shoulder roast that I bought at the . The seller, Roeske Farms, was out of pork butt (which is commonly used for pulled pork) but the shoulder worked just fine, and the meat was to die for.

As with many family recipes, I don't measure the ingredients. I just use as much as I need based on taste. To make this recipe, you'll need the following:

  • A 4- to 5-pound pork butt roast, or pork shoulder roast
  • 1 large slow cooker
  • 1 large bottle of Coca-Cola
  • 1 large bottle of Sweet Baby Ray's Honey Barbecue Sauce (or your favorite sauce)
  • 1 package of hamburger buns
