Oakland County Sheriff's Department Mourns Death of Longtime Reserve Deputy

Reserve Sgt. John Vick gave 30 years of volunteer service to the Oakland County Sheriff's Department and was named "Reserve Deputy of the Year" in 2006.

A reserve deputy who worked out of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office’s Highland Township Substation is being remembered for his “spirit, kindness, humor and dedication.”

Reserve Sgt. John Vick, 84, died Nov. 23 after a long battle with cancer.

A lifelong resident of HIghland Township and an Army veteran of World War II, Vick started as a volunteer with the Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy Program in 1981 and officially retired in 2011 after 30 years of volunteer service.

He also spent countless hours on the sheriff’s office gun range, assisting three range officers throughout his years of service, “t is at the range where he touched many deputies with countless stories and jokes mixed in with his range instructions,” Sheriff Michael Bouchard said.

Bouchard said Vick was an “extremely hard worker” and was among the top 20 reserve officers each year since he began his volunteer service. In 2006, he earned the “Reserve Deputy of the Year” title.

“He has touched many lives in a positive way, both Oakland County residents and most deputies at some time in their careers, a true good man in every sense of the word,” Bouchard said. “Reserve Sergeant Vick’s presence will be sadly missed by all, but his spirit, kindness, humor and dedication will live on within the Sheriff’s Office.”

In death, he will remain “a role model for all who serve the residents of Oakland County,” the sheriff said.

Memorial visitation is scheduled from 3-8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, at Elton Black & Son Funeral Home, 3295 E. Highland Road, Highland. The funeral will be held at the Highland Chapel, also at the funeral home, at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3.
