Weekend Planner: Blood Drives, Live Music, Art Reception, Speed Skating Lessons and 'Tot Time' at the Park

Here's a look at what's happening around the White Lake area this weekend.

1.  GIVE BLOOD, SAVE A LIFE

Where: , 425 Farnsworth St,, White Lake and , 9086 Hutchins St.White Lake

When: Dublin's drive takes place from 12:30-6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6; St. Patrick's is from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8

Why go: Support the American Red Cross' vital work of collecting blood and help save lives.

Where: , 6707 Highland Rd, White Lake

When:  Friday, 9 p.m.-ish (get there earlier for a good dinner and a better seat)

Cost: $5

Why go: Enjoy hearing special guest Blue Cat in one of two performances this month at Billy's.

Where: Indian Springs Metropark, 5100 Indian Trail, White Lake

When: 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7

Cost: $3 per child for the program; daily park admission is $5 unless you have purchased an annual park pass

Why go: Kids ages two through five learn the answer to the question, "How do animals survive all winter long?" Be prepared to look for animal tracks outdoors; dress warmly.

Where: Huron Valley Council for the Arts, 205 W. Livingston Road, Highland

When: 7-9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6 (gallery reception); the gallery hours for the exhibit take place from 1-5 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays through Saturday, Jan. 28.

Cost: Free

Why go: See the unique work of artists Marilyn M. Prucka, Loretta Oliver and Sue Walton; though their pieces are quite different, Prucka explains their work utilizes "locally harvested natural black walnut hull dye as a unifying step in a collaborative exhibition." Light refreshments also are available.

5.

Where: Waterford Rolladium Skating Center, 4475 Highland Road in Waterford

When: 4:30-5:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7

Cost: $6 for a single class (or $20 for a four-session class)

Why go: Learn how to skate with speed and grace.
