Ask the Chief: Resident Expresses Concerns About Speed Limit on Farnsworth

A recent change to the speed limit on Farnsworth, off Union Lake, has caused some issues for at least one resident near Dublin Elementary.

On Farnsworth Road the speed limit was changed from 25 to 35 not too long ago. This had created some problems at Dublin School during drop off and pick up times. There are now vehicles driving through a school zone at 35-40 mph when there are children walking/running down the road and crossing at the two crosswalks, only one of which is manned by a crossing guard. I have also witnessed, on numerous occasions, children running across the road, sometimes in front of traffic. My wife has twice now had to slam on her breaks and stop when school children have darted across the road in front of her. My question is why is it not 25 mph here, and what can be done to make this situation safer?

Chief Edward Harris: The speed limit on Farnsworth was changed so that it conforms to the state requirements for speed limits. There is warning signage as well as school zone 25 mph signs with times that the school zone limit is in effect on Farnsworth. If motorists continue to speed or fail to follow the posted school zone limit, the police department will take steps to increase presence in that area. We are happy to direct extra patrols to an area when there is a problem. We would like to know, with as much specifics as possible, the day(s), and time of day that this seems to be occurring the most. We can then try to increase patrols in the area.
