Can Officers Patrol My Neighborhood?

A resident asked whether police can drive through his neighborhood to increase visibility.

I see officers travel southbound on Williams Lake Road, then turn west onto Elizabeth Lake Road and continue past Sandycrest Drive.

Why can't officers drive through the Fox Bay subdivisions to make their presence known, look for signs of trouble and speak with citizens who are out about the neighborhood?

Chief Edward Harris: Mr. Grubb, thank you for the question. Our officers do indeed get into the neighborhoods as often as possible. In fact, during the month of May, our officers conducted area patrols in Fox Bay on at least 14 occasions. Considering the number of subdivisions we have in White Lake and the number of officers on duty on any given shift, I believe that was very good coverage.

Obviously, some neighborhoods get more attention than other neighborhoods, simply due to the level of activity in a certain neighborhood. For instance, there are certain locations in White Lake that generate a large number of our calls for service and, as a result, require a larger share of our time.

In the event that there are specific problems in a particular area at particular times, resident(s) can contact us, and we will conduct what we call directed patrols or special attention patrols to address that specific issue.

We require our officers to get into the neighborhoods as much as possible and appreciate the feedback we receive from the residents.
