Lakeland Experiences Faulty Detector and Small Fire on Wednesday

The two incidents are said to be unrelated according to the fire department.

UPDATED: There was a small electrical fire at on Wednesday at 4 p.m. As a result, the board of education meeting has been canceled. It will be rescheduled at a date yet to be determined.

All activities scheduled at the high school for Wednesday night are also canceled.

"It was confined to a motor in the ventilation system and the fire had gone out prior to our arrival," Lt. Jim Thompson of the said. Because the fire occurred in the ventilation system, a significant portion of the school was filled with smoke.

"We were able to open some doors and windows then, using fans, clear the smoke from the school," Thompson said.

Power was also cut at the school so that the fire department could check the system and ensure no further danger. After everything checked out, the department gave the all-clear. According to Thompson, there were no restrictions given at that time meaning the cancellation of the meeting and activities was a district decision, not a decision made by the fire department.

Earlier Wednesday, in an unrelated incident, a classroom was evacuated after a carbon monoxide detector went off.

The fire department was called, and no traces of carbon monoxide were found. It was determined that the detector was faulty, and the kids returned to class.

Principal Bob Behnke sent an email out to parents, and said a new detector would be placed in the classroom.
