Man Targets Daycare Centers Near Churches, Caught Red-Handed in Brighton

The following information was supplied by the White Lake Township Police Department. Arrests and charges do not indicate convictions.

A 39-year-old from Mason, MI was taken into custody by Michigan State Police in Brighton on July 28 after being caught in the act taking items from a car parked in the parking lot of a Brighton daycare center near a church.

The man was caught with items taken earlier in the day from a vehicle in White Lake. That vehicle was parked at , which is also near a church.

Lt. Don Nankervis said the man is suspected of taking items from car parked at daycare centers at or near churches in Oakland, Livingston, Wayne and Washtenaw counties.

"In the case of the White Lake larceny, a woman left her purse on the floor of her locked car," Nankervis said. "The man smashed the window of the car and took the purse."

Nankervis said the man was breaking into a car in Brighton when a witness caught him and called police.

"He fled the scene, but was picked up by a trooper with the state police," he said.

The Michigan State Police are handling the investigation, it's unknown if the man has been officially charged for the White Lake crime.

White Lake officer catches men taking jet skis

White Lake Officer Roxanne Ostrowski noticed a Chevy Trailblazer parked in the public access site on Cedar Island Lake off Oxbow Lake Road on Aug. 10 at 3 a.m., which is after hours.

According to Nankervis, Ostrowksi shined the spotlight on the car and two men fled from near the vehicle. One man fled down Oxbow Lake Road, and the other along the shoreline of the lake. Neither were caught.

When Ostrowski investigated the scene, she found two jet skis along the shoreline near where the men were.

"We contacted the owner (of the jet skis) and he said both had been tied to his dock on the other side of the lake," Nankervis said. One jet ski had it's key left in the ignition.

The jet skis were returned to the owner, and the incident remains under investigation.
