White Lake Police Arrest Men Accused of Stealing Gasoline

The following information was supplied by the White Lake Township Police Department. Arrests and charges do not indicate convictions.

Two men were arrested Sunday after gas station attendants said they witnessed the pair fill up a sport utility vehicle with gasoline and leave without paying.

According to Chief Edward Harris, one man filled the tank at the Speedway while the other went inside to pay. Attendants told police the man attempted to pay with a gift card but had insufficient funds to cover the $92 fill-up. The man left, leaving the gift card, and took off running from the station. The other man got into the SUV and drove off onto White Banks Boulevard, the police report states.

The attendants called police. When police arrived, one officer watched the surveillance tape while another drove through the neighborhood off White Banks Boulevard. According to the report, the officer found the SUV parked in the driveway of a home on Oxhill.

"The officer watching the video was able to confirm that the car in the driveway was the same seen on the surveillance," Harris said.

The officer waited until one of the men came out of the home and got into the car to drive away. The officer then initiated a traffic stop. The man was positively identified by the attendants as one of the men involved and was arrested. The second man couldn't be located at that time, although his wallet was left in the SUV.

The man under arrest was taken to the station and was issued a citation for larceny of gas.

On Tuesday, the second man showed up to the station to claim his wallet. He initially denied participating in the crime, but based on the information gathered by police, there was enough evidence to arrest the man. He also was issued a citation for larceny of gas and was released.

Home broken into

A home on the 300 block of Sycamore was broken into between 3-6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Harris said an unknown person entered the home through a side door and took prescription drugs and jewelry.

"There is no indication of forced entry," Harris said.

There are no suspects at this time, and the incident remains under investigation.
