Officer gives chase, captures suspect

White Lake Police Officer Greg Gondek is being praised for his role in catching a suspect wanted for several "smash and grab" thefts at gas stations and tobacco store throughout Waterford.

At 3:10 a.m. Friday, Gondek heard Waterford Police talking over their police radio about a silver Chevrolet Blazer that had allegedly been seen at the scene of a breaking and entering Thursday night, Lt. Adam Kline said. The car was also at the scene of other breaking and enterings.

As the call came through, a silver Blazer passed Gondek traveling south on Williams Lake Road near M-59. Gondek ran the plates through the system, and the plates came back as bad plates, Kline said.

"He initiated a traffic stop with his lights, and the vehicle took off," Kline said. The vehicle did not stop, even after the officer turned on his siren.

Gondek pursued the vehicle through Waterford to an apartment complex near Scott Lake Road and Dixie Highway. The driver, a Waterford resident, then bailed from the car and ran on foot, Kline said.

"Gondek chased him on foot, and after the man refused to stop, he was Tasered by Gondek," he said.

The man was arrested on the scene and is expected to face charges related to the breaking and enterings in Waterford, where Waterford police are handling the case.

Larcenies reported

Police responded to a rash of reports of larcenies from autos and a home invasion, in which suspects entered an attached garage, between Wednesday and Friday.

The larcenies took place on Oxhill Drive, Newport and Trenton, Kline said. All the vehicles were unlocked, and items taken included GPS systems, cash, change, sunglasses, iPods and cellphones. Tools were also taken from the garage of one home.

White Lake Police urge everyone to lock their vehicles, to not leave valuable items in vehicles, and to lock the doors to their garages and homes.
