Police Blotter: Breaking and Enterings, Property Destruction and a Prank Gone Wrong

Here's a roundup of calls from Friday through Tuesday.

White Lake Police are investigating two breaking and enterings at local businesses that officials think might be related.

The first incident occurred at 4 a.m. on Saturday at a tobacco shop on the 8100 block of Cooley Lake Road.

"We believe someone used a brick to smash in the front window and gain entry into the business," Chief Edward Harris said. "That person then took a bag from the store and filled it with several cartons of cigarettes and a few other items."

Golf course destruction

Two 19-year-old White Lake residents were arrested after a night of destruction at in White Lake.

Police caught the two in the act as they were riding around the golf course late Sunday night into early Monday destroying holes, tees, signs and more.

"It appears they entered one of the maintenance sheds and took a John Deere Gator from the course," Harris said. A Gator is similar to a tractor.

People living near the course called police. When officers cornered the teens on the course, they fled on foot.

"As they were running through yards, one of the homeowners actually apprehended one of the teens for us," Harris said. That teen allegedly admitted to the destruction and also gave police directions to his partner in crime's house. The second teen was picked up, and both were brought to the station and questioned. They were then let go by police, pending issuance of a warrant.

"We believe alcohol was a factor in the case of one of the teens," Harris said.

Teen prank targets wrong car

Six teenagers ranging from 14 to 17 years old were brought in after they and the driver of the car they were in threw objects at a passing police car.

According to Harris, the driver of the vehicle, a 17-year-old, threw an old banana and some eggs at a police vehicle as the two vehicles passed each other driving down opposite lanes of Cooley Lake Road near Oxbow Lake Road.

"The officer was able to turn around promptly and close in on the vehicle," Harris said. "The car pulled into a subdivision and parked in a driveway on Ashland Street. When the officer approached, the driver admitted to throwing the objects."

All six teens were taken to the police station and released to their parents. The driver was ticketed for throwing an object in the path of a motor vehicle.

"Our patrol vehicle was fine, but this was a very serious situation that had the potential to cause a very serious accident," Harris said.
