Police Blotter: Fleeing, Larcenies, a Fire and More

A roundup of police calls from Friday through Monday. In that time, police had more than 235 calls for service.

An 18-year-old Waterford man was arraigned on charges of fleeing and eluding police after allegedly attempting to flee from officers on a motorbike at 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

According to White Lake Police Chief Edward Harris, Steven James Schulte was charged with one count of fleeing and eluding an officer—a two-year felony—and driving while suspended—a one-year felony. Schulte could not pay his $10,000 bond (with 10 percent) and remains in the Oakland County Jail.

Harris said the chase began on Williams Lake Road, near Cooley.

An officer observed Schulte on a motocross bike that was road-ready, meaning it had no plates, and Schulte was not wearing a helmet, according to the report.

The officer tried to stop Schulte on Williams Lake Road, but Schulte reportedly looked back at the police car, sped up and passed the car in front of him.

Harris said the officer continued the pursuit and Schulte again looked back at the police car and sped up. This time, Schulte's baseball cap flew off his head and hit the police car.

At one point, Schulte reportedly went off the road and entered some off-road vehicle trails near the area. Other officers arrived on the scene and began searching the area for Schulte.

One officer traveled through Fox Bay and found a suspicious vehicle driving around the subdivision. The officer stopped the vehicle and recognized Schulte in the backseat.

A passenger in the car reportedly told police that Schulte had hidden the bike in his backyard. He took police to his home. Officers located the bike and arrested Schulte.

If convicted, Schulte faces one to two years in jail. This is his second fleeing and eluding charge. According to Harris, he was convicted of the same crime in Pontiac in 2010.

Larcenies

Several vehicles on Sandycrest and Sussex were broken into between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday. Harris said it's possible the cases are all related.

Some of the cars were left unlocked. Items taken include GPS units and cash.

The incidents remain under investigation.

Fire

Downed power lines sparked a fire Sunday on White Lake Road, causing a closure of the road between Ormond and Lake Grove.

The lines were downed due to the weather and struck an attached garage near the 4000 block of White Lake Road. Firefighters were able to put the fire out.

There were no injuries, but the garage sustained some damage.

Violation of bond

A man was arrested for violation of a condition of his bond on Sunday, shortly after being released on bond in relation to a domestic assault charge.

Harris said the man was initially arrested early Sunday for domestic assault. He was arraigned and later released on bond with the condition that he not contact his victim.

After his release, he allegedly began calling his victim. She notified police, and when police arrived at her home on Castlewood, they spoke with the man on the phone after he called her again.

"We asked him to come into the PD to get some of his belongings," Harris said. When the man showed up, he was arrested for violation of a condition of his bond and released after being arraigned a second time and posting bond.
