A 14-year-old runaway from Waterford Township is likely facing armed robbery charges after White Lake Police say the teen attempted to rob a local dollar store.
According to the report, the incident happened Oct. 29 at 7:55 p.m. at the Dollar Tree on Cooley Lake Road.
The report states that the teen entered the store wearing a mask from the movie Scream. He went to the back of the store, grabbed a kitchen knife from the display and walked to the front of the store.
When he reached the checkout, the report states that the teen pointed the knife at the cashier and demanded money.
Police Chief Ed Harris said the clerk told police that the teen had said he needed the money for food.
While talking to the teen, the cashier called police, the report states. Harris said officers arrived on the scene almost immediately - while the teen was still in the store talking with the cashier.
Officers were able to enter the store and apprehend the teen without incident, the report states.
"Luckily, no one was hurt," Harris said.
The teen was taken into custody and lodged at Children's Village - a detention facility for juveniles. Harris said a juvenile petition was submitted to Oakland County Probate Court and that the teen was due in court Tuesday at 1 p.m. Harris also said it's believed that the teen is a runaway from Waterford Township.
"He will likely be facing charges of either armed robbery or attempted armed robbery," Harris said. "It will be up to the court to decide if they release him to his parents or keep him at Children's Village."
