Video: Mock Car Crash Shows Students the Dangers of Drunk Driving

In a ramp up to prom and graduation, Lakeland students, and White Lake Police and Fire highlight the consequences of drinking and driving.

Lakeland Senior Corine Cipponeria lay bloodied and unconscious on the crumpled hood of a car. In the driver's seat, senior Bobby Schumacher struggled to breathe. On the grass 10 feet from the car lay the bodies of two of their classmates, lifeless.

In Tuesday's mock crash, three students died, and three more suffered extensive injuries. Students witnessed police and fire arrive on the scene, pry the teens from the car using the jaws of life, and the coroner declaring some of teens deceased. At the end, a hearse arrived, placed the bodies in body bags and drove off.

Students looking on were visibly shaken.

The narrator laid out the scene for the audience and explained that wanting to get a headstart on the night, four seniors, including Cipponeria and Schumacher decided to gather at a house and drink before heading out to the Senior All Night Party. After a little pre-partying, the teens piled into a car, Schumacher behind the wheel, and took off.

Speeding in excess of 65 mph, Schumacher blew past a red light broadsiding the car driven by two of their classmates. The result, a deadly crash that played out in front of the Lakeland audience.

"I was a little amazed at how many students fainted and got weak from this," Parent Wendy Johnston-Lidster wrote on the White Lake Patch Facebook page. "Hopefully this shook these kids up enough to think twice and make the right decision, even after they have long graduated from school."

The mock car crash is held every year at Lakeland High School and aims at showing teens the consequences of their actions should they chose to drink and drive.

Scott Rolando, the Lakeland teacher who put on the event, called it a success, "I would like to thank the students, staff, fire fighters, police officers, emergency personnel and funeral home staff that help make today's event possible."
