White Lake Police Warn of New 'Phishing' Scam

Police say they have had several reports recently of people posing as collection agency representatives to collect money from residents.

The following is a press release from the White Lake Police Department.

White Lake Police Investigators have received several reports recently of individuals posing as a collection agency representative, the con artist will contact a victim by mail, email or telephone claiming the person owes a specific dollar amount to a particular company, often stating they have a delinquent loan.

The objective is to convince victims to wire money to pay the "delinquent accounts" or to provide personal information for late use in illegal activity. The con artist will threaten to report "overdue bills" to credit bureaus, take some form of legal action or even drain money from victims' bank accounts without their consent.

Don't just assume the caller is a scammer. You may have been a victim of identity theft or mistaken identity. The best way to check to see if an actual fraudulent loan has been opened in your name is to order a free copy of your credit report from one of the three major credit bureaus and check your history.
