Meeting Briefs: March 15 Township Board Meeting

A roundup of news from Tuesday's township board meeting.

The Fire Department awarded two citizens Certificates of Commendation during Tuesday's Township Board meeting, for their heroic actions in January.

Charles Frost, 50, was given a plaque and publicly recognized for his role in saving his 71-year-old neighbor from a fire in her apartment. The neighbor was unconscious when Frost and James Rupp, 45, pulled her from her smoke filled apartment on Jan. 20. Frost administered two rescue breathes and the woman regained consciousness. Fire Chief Anthony Maltese said he and the firefighters who were on the scene fully believe the woman would have died had it not been for Frost and Rupp.

Parks and Recreation

The board approved an agreement with the state Department of Natural Resources to receive a $350,000 Natural Resources Trust Fund grant.

The township was awarded the grant in 2009 to make improvements to Bloomer Park off McKeachie Road, but hadn't accepted the grant due to language changes in the agreement until now. The parks and recreation committee wants to make this a natural type park that would include a, observation pier that overlooks Grass Lake, and a pavilion according to community planner Jason Iacoangelli.

In other parks and recreation news, the White Lake Farmers Market will kick off on May 7 and run on Saturdays through Oct. 22. The market will open at 8 a.m. and run until 1 p.m. and will offer fruits, vegetables, plants and much more.
