Quick Hits: Township Board Discusses Demolition of Home

The White Lake Township Board of Trustees will receive bids Wednesday to help determine whether or not the township will demolish the home next to the township office.

The White Lake Board of Trustees met Tuesday night and discussed several items including the demolition of the home at 7515 Highland Road, and the solicitation ordinance.

The solicitation ordinance was tabled, again, in order to allow the township time to come up with a fee schedule. Once the schedule is in place, it's expected the board will approve the ordinance.

The interest in adopting a solicitation ordinance was sparked by about pushy door-to-door natural gas salespeople. The proposed ordinance would require all solicitors wanting to do business in White Lake to obtain a license with the township and undergo a background check with the police department. This ordinance will not apply to non-profits, religious institutions or groups like the Girl Scouts.

The township will move ahead with asbestos testing at the home at 7515 Highland Road, and will disconnect the electric and gas at the home. The home and property is owned by the township. On Wednesday, the township will open bids for the demolition of the home and report back to the board of trustees with the cost.

The home, according to the township, is in disrepair and while alternative uses were considered at one time the issues with the home have prevented any form of occupancy. The home's issues include structural problems, asbestos and an inoperable septic and well.

Once of the ideas being entertained by the board is demolishing the home, leveling the ground and turning that space into additional parking for the township, library and police department - all located next door.
