Quick Hits: Township Board Moves on Lake Neva Dam Repair

The White Lake Township Board met for nearly three hours on Tuesday to discuss several items including cemeteries, sewers and special assessment districts.

The White Lake Township Board of Trustees approved a resolution to create a around Lake Neva in order to fund emergency repairs to a leaking dam on the lake.

The neighborhood of Lakewood Village, located just off Bogie Lake Road, surrounds Lake Neva and will bear the brunt of the special assessment, however other homes that border the lake but are not in the neighborhood were also included because they will benefit from the repair, according to the township.

If the dam is not fixed in the next few months, it's highly likely that it will fail and cause major flooding throughout Lakewood Village and to downstream communities.

"Because of the urgency needed, we have to move ahead with this assessment tonight," Supervisor Greg Baroni said.

In addition to the public hearing on the special assesment, where a small number of residence voiced their opposition, there was also a presentation from the Friends of Highland Recreation Area on the future plans for the Edsel Ford, property located within the state park.

The plans included conceptual designs and showed what the group hopes to achieve at the park in the next 25 years - making the park and the Haven Hill property a destination for visitors around the state.

Township honors married couples celebrating milestones

The township awarded two framed declarations to Bob and Jeannine Kaiser, and Lee and Wilma Kaines for their recent wedding anniversaries.

The Kaisers celebrated their 70th wedding anniverary in July, and the Kaines celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary in August.

Other items approved on the agenda include:

  • A $32,700 propsal to move the township's zoning ordinance to a , increasing its functionality online and allowing users to search for particular sections of the ordiance utilizing hyperlinks. The current online version of the zoning ordinance does not allow this.
  • A renewal of a temporary certificate of occupancy for . The temporary certificate is necessary until a assessed to the township by Commerce Township is complete.
  • The final site plan for White Lake Market Place. This will allow the developer to move ahead with plans for the .
  • The contact for Teamsters 214 (township employees' union) and a healthcare plan for non-union township employees.
