Township Approves Solicitation Ordinance

The White Lake Township Board of Trustees met Tuesday night.

With a few amendments, the White Lake was unanimously approved by the township board Tuesday night at the regular township meeting.

The ordinance, which will limit approved solicitation in the township between the hours of 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., will require any business going door to door in the township to get a permit. This ordinance does not apply to religious organizations, non-profits or groups like the Girl Scouts.

In addition to a background check through the  and an application to be filed with the township, any potential solicitors must also submit evidence of sales tax permits.

The ordinance also states that solicitors would not be allowed to solicit in subdivisions or at homes and businesses where "no solicitor" signs are posted. According to the ordinance, any solicitors found in violation of the ordinance would be subject to civil fines up to $500.

The interest in adopting a solicitation ordinance was sparked by about pushy door-to-door natural gas salespeople.

The township has not yet set fees for the licenses. A fee schedule will be decided soon and the cost will be enough, according to board members, to cover the cost of conducting the background check.

Bravo! I am curious about the "With a few amendments" however.
I am in hopes that the ordinance will apply to ice cream vendors as well as the gas salesmen. I am far more annoyed by the ice cream trucks coming down my street 3 times a day. The original ordinance can be read here: http://www.whitelaketwp.com/downloads/ord_134_1.pdf

Thanks Gerry, I didn't make those amendments clear in the article. The amendments referred to the background check, the hours allowed and the need to show proof of sales tax permits. My understanding is that the ordinance will apply to door-to-door sales only, but I can double check on that. Thanks again!

Thanks, Brooke.
Part 6 under section 4 says that vendors may not use audible sound in excess of 55db. I conclude from that ice cream vendors were intentionally included in the drafting of the ordinance and should be required to get permits as well.

I would like to know if the ordinance will require the solicitors to present or wear proof that they have obtained a permit from the township. It always makes me uneasy when someone comes to my door trying to sell windows or what-have-you and possibly not being as legit as they present themselves to be.

Hi Luna, I do believe they will have to have ID on them that proves they are approved by the township to go door to door. Thanks!

It would be helpful to know, if it actually was seismic testing. Following the last episode (byRead More West Bay) it was noted, at the Highland Twp Board meeting by the Sheriff's office, that residents would receive notification prior to any such future events. If so, who received notice and how was this communicated? An announcement in the "Patch" would have been useful.... The Tues. June 25th TOWN HALL 6 - 8pm, by the WRC (Water Resources Commissioner) Jim Nash, will provide an abundance of information on issues re oil/gas drilling and fracking, which EVERYONE needs to know due to impacts on both surface and ground (well) water. Particularly, those who have been approached with an oil/gas lease (ie; near Clyde Rd & Hickory Ridge, re exploration for drilling on the 'soccer field'). People need to know what they are getting into. If it comes to drilling/fracking, seismic testing will be seen as trivial.

After the last round of explosions I contacted Patrick Gibson at West Bay Exploration Company andRead More was told that yes, they have been conducting tests in the area over the last 18 months and "The impact of these charges is barely audible at the surface and would not sound like an explosion on neighboring property. Landowners affected by the survey are contacted through the mail so that they are aware of our timing. I am not sure what your mysterious explosions were, but I am pretty sure they were not the result of our surveys." In the press release provided by Laura Vogel today Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner Jim Nash says Thousands of acres of land in Oakland has been leased to Jordan Exploration. I am again confused. Do both companies have leases in Oakland County? Is it legal for them to detonate dynamite at all hours?

So, Patrick Gibson can check West Bay records then KNOW if their testing occurred on Sat. 6/15/13Read More 9pm, instead of being 'pretty sure'. Guess I'll have to call Pat .... Getting answers to your questions re the companies involved, Gerry, can be mysterious too --- but, likely just a technicality as this industry includes 3 types, to: explore; drill; and extract (and/or frack). So, nailing anyone down to answer questions or get a commitment is elusive at best.
