Township Board Approves Funding for New School Zone Signs

The White Lake Township board has entered into an agreement with the Road Commission for Oakland County and the Huron Valley School District to purchase three flashing yellow school zone signs.

That school sign on Bogie Road continues to get publicity, the latest on Ellen's syndicated show when a Fenton resident sent in a picture of the sign.

It appears people will no longer be laughing about the confusing sign, which at one point listed six times for motorists to slow down in a school zone. The on Tuesday approved a line item to help pay for one-third the total cost of three new flashing yellow signs.

These new signs will cost the township, the Huron Valley School District and the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) $9,333 each. These signs will replace the current school zone signs along Bogie Lake Road in front of the Huron Valley Schools complex.

The current signs in February when the school zone signs, telling drivers to slow to 25 mph during school days, originally cited six different school zone times.

Following the publicity, the RCOC changed the signs to reflect just two separate school zone times.

The old signs stated drivers, on school days, needed to slow down to 25 mph at six different times: between 6:49 a.m.-7:15 a.m.; 7:52 a.m.-8:22 a.m.; and 8:37 a.m.-9:07 a.m. during the mornings. In the afternoons the time listed were 2:03 p.m.-2:33 p.m., 3:04 p.m.-3:34 p.m. and 3:59 p.m.-4:29 p.m.

The new signs state the school zone will be in effect from 6:49 a.m.-9:07 a.m. in the mornings and 2:03 p.m.-4:29 p.m.

Under the new agreement, the three parties will each pay $9,333 to replace the newest signs with a flashing yellow light, and a sign that says "School Zone Speed Limit 25 mph When Flashing."

The lights would then flash during the original seven times listed prior to the change.

Ordinances Tabled

Proposals to instate a new  that will solidify the township's current cemetery rules and regulations, and a  designed to screen door-to-door solicitors in the township were tabled. Both were tabled so that lingering questions could be answered. They were supposed to have their second reading Tuesday, and will likely appear again on the agenda for the April meeting.

Other items discussed Tuesday include:

  • The approval of professional fees for the appraisal of CVS. The store appealed its township assessment.
  • Three approved purchases for the fire department, including the repair of a tanker, the purchase of a fire hose and the purchase of parts for the departments radios.
  • The renewal of a hazardous waste disposal program. The board ultimately decided against joining the program provided by No Haz, but will look into providing information to residents on where they can properly dispose of hazardous materials like oil, gasoline, paints, etc.
