Township to Hold Meeting Thursday to Address Spice/K2

The White Lake Township Board of Trustees will meeting Thursday at 4 p.m. to discuss banning spice/K2 and bath salt sales in White Lake.

Following the lead of other communities in the area, White Lake is expected to ban the sale of spice, a synthetic marijuana, and bath salts, a synthetic hallucinogen.

A meeting will be held at township hall Thursday at 4 p.m.

"Attempts to halt the sale of K2 or Spice and Bath Salts have so far been thwarted due to loopholes found in the laws created to prohibit the product," Supervisor Greg Baroni said in a written statement. "By making simple changes in the chemical makeup, the manufacturers are able to 'legally' manufacture and sell the product to retail stores and gas stations who then sell to the public at outrageous profits – most of the buyers being teenagers."

Baroni said the recent public outcry, coupled with the recent deaths and crimes committed by teens under the influence of spice, has prompted the township to take a stand.

"Some time ago, the owners of establishments here in White Lake who sold Spice were asked if they would stop selling the product. We did get some short-lived compliance but the fact that an enormous profit can be made is a big incentive for these establishments to continue selling and they do sell it, often," Baroni said.
