White Lake Board Approves More Than $5,000 in Cemetery Maintenance

The White Lake Township Board approved the use of budgeted funds to clean up White Lake Cemetery, and re-gravel White Lake and Oxbow cemeteries.

White Lake Treasurer, and township sexton, Jay Brendel's bid to do gravel work at White Lake Cemetery and Oxbow Cemetery was approved at Tuesday night's regular board meeting.

The bid was approved unanimously for about $5,000 at White Lake Cemetery, and about $3,800 for Oxbow Cemetery. Brendel abstained from the vote.

"I've been the township sexton for more than 25 years at zero cost to the township residents," Brendel said.

Trustee Carol Burkard, who has previously disagreed with Brendel's position as both sexton and township treasurer, said she supported the bid because it was Brendel's last meeting as treasurer and he's been sexton for a number of years.

Other board members agreed, stating that Brendel's knowledge of the cemeteries and where the plots are located might help ease the fears of residents concerned about the re-graveling of the roads at the cemeteries.

The board also approved a request from Supervisor Greg Baroni to talk to maintenance companies about removing brush, trees and tree limbs, including Oak trees, at White Lake Cemetery for a cost not to exceed $5,000.
