Your Thoughts: Iraq War Officially Over

After almost nine years of conflict, the U.S. ends the war with a flag ceremony in Baghdad.

After almost nine years of war, 4,500 American deaths and 100,000 Iraqi deaths, the Iraq war officially ended today, an Associated Press (AP) article reports. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said it was worth the U.S.’s sacrifice because Iraq is on the way to democracy.

Approximately 4,000 U.S. troops are still in Iraq, and they are expected to be withdrawn by the end of the month, the AP article said. President Barack Obama has said that the U.S. will keep a "robust diplomatic presence in Iraq, foster a deep and lasting relationship with the nation and maintain a strong military force in the region."
