Brooks Elementary Students Win Math Pentathlon

Teachers, parents work hard to provide a great math experience for local students.

The following was submitted to White Lake Patch by Principal Steven Chisik.

Kristin Powers, Sally Young and parent coordinator Mrs. Lynch have worked hard to create another outstanding Math Pentathlon experience for our students.

This year, we had a record number of Bobcats participating in the Math Pentathlon. The after school activity is designed around students playing math games. The games were purchased by the PTO a few years ago, and have been a source of fun and challenge for students at each grade level. The math games are great because they require students to practice many of the skills they learn in class each day. Students are encouraged to use their own developing skill set to solve problems, both individually and in team settings.

Last year, a group of involved parents, including our own Mrs. Lynch developed a plan for an inter-school district competition that would offer students a chance to compete with students from each corner of the district. While not every Huron Valley Elementary School has chosen to participate in the event, most schools sent teams.

Last year, for their first competition, over 120 elementary aged students participated in the event. This year over 200 students participated.

It was an amazing experience for each of our students. Our team of Bobcats represented the community with pride and respect. Students demonstrated positive attitudes and great sportsmanship in each of their scheduled math games against students from other buildings. At the close of the event, our students cheered on their opponents and applauded their accomplishments. When Brooks was recognized as the overall winning team, our students celebrated with great enthusiasm and conducted themselves like the winners they are. Congratulations to everyone who participated.
