Dress Code for White Lake-Highland Students

As the temperature starts to rise, students are reminded to dress appropriately for school.

As temperatures climb this week, students need to remember to keep their wardrobes "cool" to avoid breaking public school dress codes.

It might be a good time to review the dress code with your student (and avoid getting a phone call to bring a change of clothes.

Here's what not to wear to schools, according to a message from the schools:

  • Clothing needs to be appropriate with no inappropriate slogans or sayings.
  • Clothing should not expose the torso in any way and undergarments should not be showing.  Our biggest challenge seems to be the length of shorts and skirts for our female students. Athletic cut shorts must follow the same rules as all other shorts.
  • At Lakeland we test with the following procedure: The creased end of a folded piece of 8 by 11 paper is placed at the bottom of the shorts or skirt.  If the other end of the paper does not touch the knee, they are not appropriate. We know that this is difficult with today's fashion, but ask that you support us in our effort to follow district policy and create the best possible learning environment.
  • If a student is seen to be wearing clothing that is deemed inappropriate they will be asked to change, if they have other clothing with them, and if not will have to call home to have clothing brought to them.
  • Repeated offenses may result in further consequences.

If you have any further questions, please call (248) 676-8321 and ask for any of our Associate Principals or our Dean of Students.
