Eagles Corral Mavericks 5-3 To Win First Round of Barber's Cup

The two rivalry teams play twice a year for the local trophy.

The Lakeland hockey team corralled the Milford Mavericks 5-3 Friday night to win game 1 of “The Barber's Cup.” The rivalry game between the two Huron Valley high schools was a thriller from the outset. Trent Lloyd scored at the 9:18 mark of the 1st period giving the Eagles the early 1-0. Less than a minute later, Milford's William Martin scored for the Mavericks to tie the game at 1-1.

With the scored tied heading into the second period, the Eagles and Mavericks went end to end. Both squads were very physical in a tight checking period.  Senior Trevor Tierney scored with 6:13 left giving the Mavericks a 2-1 lead. Lakeland captain Kyle Jakubowski scored on the power play for the Eagles to knot the score at 2 apiece. With just 47 seconds left in the 2nd, Trevor Tierney tipped the puck in giving Milford at 3-2 lead.

The third period got chippy as the crosstown rivals really got after it. The Eagles tied the scored at Justin Pahl lit the lamp on a power play with 13:42 remaining tying the score at 3-3. The goalies took over for both teams making key saves the rest of the 3rd period.

Justin Pahl scored the winning goal for Lakeland with just 28 seconds remaining. The Mavericks pulled their goalie after a time out with Lakeland clinging to a 4-3 lead. After a scramble at mid-ice, Nolan Johnson got an empty net goal with just 1.9 seconds remaining clinching a 5-3 win for Lakeland.

This is the 7th year of the “Barber's Cup" Trophy game between the Eagles and Mavericks. This exciting match up is sponsored by the Matt Langley Foundation and the Milford Barbers. The Matt Langley Foundation provides two $1,000 scholarships to a hockey player from each school. The scholarship is provided by the Langley family in remembrance of their son Matt Langley.

The Milford Barber's Shop provides the trophies for “The Barber's Cup.”  The teams play twice this year. The trophy winner will be decided after the outcome of both games. Milford (1-7) will host Lakeland (4-1-1) in the second game on Saturday, December 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hartland Ice Arena.
