Intro to Music Theory

This Huron Valley Council for the Arts class is taught in a seven-week session by Tracy Kash Thomas at the Highland Station House.

This course will introduce students to the basic language of music, known as music theory. Music theory provides musicians with the tools needed to communicate fundamental ideas, expression and technical direction in a given musical piece. Exercises and lessons will include reading notes in the staff; understanding note durations and rhythms; note scales; identifying key signatures; work with chords; and note intervals/relationships.

  • Supply list: Harmony and Theory by Keith Wyatt/Carl Schroeder, $13.57 at Amazon.com. Also, participants need an inexpensive workbook.
  • Tuition for seven-week session: $68 members, $75 nonmembers
