Huron Valley Board President Releases Statement on Superintendent

The Huron Valley School Board of Education held a meeting Tuesday to discuss the departure of current Superintendent Jackie Johnston.

The following was submitted to White Lake Patch by Board President Sean Carlson.

The Huron Valley Schools Board of Education, in a Special Board Meeting, met on Tuesday evening to discuss the appointment of an interim superintendent. The meeting was called in anticipation of L’Anse Creuse Public Schools Board of Education approving and finalizing a contract for Superintendent Jackie Johnston on Monday, Feb. 27. In preparation for this action, the HVS Board met to discuss and lay out plans for how to proceed. Board members feel strongly that replacing the superintendent is one of the most important duties it undertakes. This school board agrees that it is critical to be deliberate and thoughtful in our decision making in the appointment of the next superintendent. Therefore, the Board will look to internally appoint an interim superintendent from the superintendent’s central office administrative team.

The entire Board agrees the superintendent has built a strong administrative team, made up of the Deputy Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, the Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services, the Executive Director of Human Resources and the Director of Communications and Community Relations. We believe that the best case scenario would be the appointment of a member of the superintendent’s team as interim superintendent. This would provide assurances of a seamless transition and allow the Board to take the time it needs to search for a permanent replacement.

Upon the request of Superintendent Johnston, the Board of Education approved a motion to modify the Superintendent's contract and reduce the number of days for the Board to receive written notice of the superintendent’s resignation from 90 days to 60 days. Shortening the length of time allows the superintendent to transition appropriately once she has a contract in place and has resigned from Huron Valley Schools. The Huron Valley Board of Education has great respect for Superintendent Johnston and what she has accomplished here. We will work together to assure a smooth transition.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 1, and the Board expects to move forward on the interim superintendent at that time.
