Huron Valley Students Commended for Assisting Elderly Woman

Teens save missing woman in Highland.

The following is a press release from the Huron Valley School District.

Three Milford High School students rescued an elderly woman who had wondered away from her home Nov. 15. The students, who were unaware of the police search with a helicopter and K-9 unit, consider themselves fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time.

Derrick Newman and Kayla Hughes were walking in backyards on their way to friend Michael Millsap’s home, when they discovered the 81 year old woman lying face down in a ditch in Highland Township. Hughes phoned the police for help and ran to Millsap’s home for assistance. The three carried the women out of the ditch and comforted her with a blanket until police arrived.

The daughter of the women was grateful and thanked the students for saving her mother’s life. Milford High School Principal Kevin McKenna said “It's so impressive to have students who will go out of their way to help others. It's an example of the strength of our community and the hard work our parents and staff do everyday."
