Lakeland High School Has Philanthropic Goals This Week

Purchase shamrocks or donate can tabs to Lakeland High School to benefit charitable organizations.

Save those can tabs and spare change this week and help students meet their philanthropic goals.

Through March 11, students will be collecting can tabs to donate to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southeastern Michigan. The school-wide fundraiser is being run in conjunction with the Kensington Lakes Activities Association. Lakeland Student Activities Director, Scott Rolando, said they have received a good amount of can tabs so far, but he would like to see plenty more by the end of the day Friday.

“They take the tabs and they turn them in for money,” Rolando said.

Rolando explained that the tab is the only part of the can that is 100 percent aluminum, which is why they can be recycled. Donations will be accepted from anyone in the community at the Lakeland main office, where there will be a designated bucket for the can tabs.

If someone has more tabs to donate that may fit in the bucket, though, donators can call Rolando at 248-676-8385 and arrange a time to have the can tabs dropped off.

Charity in Spirit of Saint Patrick’s Day

This week and next, the Lakeland DECA program, a business and marketing club for students, will be selling shamrocks. The proceeds for the shamrocks will go to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

“Every year we try to do a variety of things to raise awareness — we are a big supporter of the MDA,” Lindsay Rubin, marketing teacher at Lakeland who heads the DECA club, said. “We try to do anything we can do to help them out.”

Donors can purchase green shamrocks for $1 each or gold shamrocks for $5. They will then be asked to sign their name on the purchased shamrocks, which will then be posted in the school cafeteria. The fundraiser will end on March 17, until then shamrocks can be bought by stopping at the Lakeland main office.

“We have a goal of earning $250 to $300 to give to the MDA,” Rolando said.
