Lakeland Update: Homecoming News and More

A look at news from Lakeland High School, as submitted by Lakeland Teacher Scott Rolando.

Scott Rolando here from Lakeland High School with this week's edition of the Lakeland Update. Here we go!

Education

Homecoming 2011 "Space Bound": Tickets for the 2011 Homecoming Dance on Oct 1st, 2011 are now on sale. Singles are $18/person and couples are $34/person. The tickets are the same price as last year and we are looking forward to a great Homecoming this school year! Tickets as of now are ONLY AVAILABLE ONLINE through PaySchools. You can go to www.lakelandhs.com and click on the link in the center of the page to purchase your tickets. Get them now, online, and avoid the lines the week of Homecoming. Tickets will be on sale in school the week of Homecoming (starting Sept 26th) for the same price. Cash and checks are only accepted at in-school sales. Credit cards and electronic checks are accepted online. If your student is planning on bringing a Non-Lakeland student, those forms are NOW AVAILABLE online at www.lakelandhs.com. you can download the form and submit it Mr. Rolando by Sept 23rd at the latest. Forms are also available in the main office at Lakeland. The Homecoming Dance will be held on Oct 1st from 7-11pm in the Lakeland Field House. Dress is semi-formal and all Lakeland High School and Huron Valley Schools Dress code and dance rules are in effect at all times. Please remember that this is a SCHOOL event and that all school rules apply. The Homecoming football game is scheduled for Friday Sept 30th at 7pm when our Eagles take on the Vikings of Walled Lake Central. At halftime we will crown our 2011 Homecoming King and Queen! Come on out and enjoy a great evening of football and fun at Homecoming 2011! The days for Homecoming Spirit Week 2011 will be released by the middle of this week, so stay tuned for that coming real soon! We do have Homecoming Cafeteria Wall Decorating scheduled for Saturday Sept 24th from 11am-3pm. Freshmen and Seniors are scheduled from 11am - 1pm, Sophomore and Juniors are scheduled from 1-3pm. This is a CLASS event, meaning the Senior class, Junior class, etc. All members of each class are encouraged to talk to their class sponsors or class officers and get involved in this great class activity! Schedule Change Requests: Friday, September 9th is the last day for schedule change requests. Please make sure if you have an error in your schedule to fill out a schedule change request in the Counseling Office by Friday.

Free PSAT Practice Test: See the attached word document for a free PSAT practice test and score back session. Sign-up is due on Friday, September 9th for the free practice tests this weekend. Sorry for the late notice, but we just received this information yesterday.  

PSAT Signup: Many of you have already registered for the PSAT. If you have not registered yet there is still time! This test is recommended for high-achieving sophomore students and college-bound junior students. See the attached PSAT Flyer for more information on how to register. If you have already signed up, stay tuned for an announcement indicating you can pick up your PSAT Student Guide to prepare for the test.

End of Summer Counseling Corner Newsletter: Check out our Counseling Corner Newsletter (attached) to get the school year started off right. Stay tuned for more editions of the newsletter in the fall, winter, and spring.

Michigan Math Prize: The 2011 Michigan Math Prize Competition, the 55th annual, for students is coming up! Registration is $4.00 and is due Sept. 20th to Mr. Loisel, the LHS Math Dept Chair. Students who participate are eligible to earn a scholarship. The competition is open to all students, but students who are very good in math are strongly encouraged to participate. Fall Play: The first rehearsal for the fall play is scheduled for this Tuesday at 4pm. Thank you!

Bageris Children's Education Fund: A college fund has been established for the Bageris children by the staff at Muir Middle School. Alex Bageris, a teacher at Muir, lost his wife in a tragic car accident, leaving three children behind. The account has been established with the Kensington Valley Credit Union and is called the Bageris Children's Education Fund (checks can be made out to this).  Checks can be taken to the bank or mailed to Kensington Valley Credit Union, 290 N. John Street Highland, MI 48357.

Sports

Volleyball: Last week the J.V. Volleyball team defeated Walled Lake Northern 25-8, 25-10, 25-5. It was an easy match for the J.V. as everything seemed to be going just right. Co-Captain and setter Amanda Breitenbach had 7 digs 5 aces and 3 kills while freshman Amanda Lenord and Amanda Lock tied for high kill with 5 each.  Walled Lake Northern had trouble passing the tough serving J.V. team. On Tuesday the J.V. team competed in the quad beating Saline, Milford and Novi scores are as follows: Saline 25-22, 25-18; Milford 25-9; and 25-8 Novi 18-25 25-21 15-13. The J.V. team has also competed in two tournaments so far. In our first of the season we lost a close match with a tough Lake Orion team in the finals. In our second tournament of the season we came away the champions not dropping a single game all day. Our record to date is 18-1. This is a very young team made up of 5 freshman and 7 sophomores who are: Amanda Lenord, Stephanie Lenord, Amanda Lock, Emily Wolfenbarger and Callie Coffin. Our Sophomores are: Co-Captain Amanda Breintenbach, Co-Captain Blair Blaszcak, Lexi Weber, Kendall Johnson, Rachel Wolfe, Lauren Balagna and Emily Chludzinski.

Varsity Volleyball: Last week our varsity Volleyball team defeated the Knights of Walled Lake Northern in three games. Great job! Lakeland Football: Last Friday our in a game that included a one hour rain delay. The . There was no JV football last week due to Mott HS not fielding a JV football team. Our Eagles won by forfeit. This week on Thursday our Freshmen and JV Eagles are home when they take on the Warriors of Walled Lake Western. Freshmen at 4:30, JV at 6:30 or following the freshmen game. This Friday at Walled Lake Western our Varsity Eagles take on the Warriors in the MIPrepZone Game of the Week. The game will be broadcast with live audio on www.miprepzone.com and after the game there will be an audio and video reply also on the website in streaming format. Good Luck Eagles against the Warriors!

Girls Cross Country: Lakeland Sports Fans, the girl's Cross Country team continued to excel last Saturday at the West Bloomfield/Brother Rice Invitational by finishing third out of 12 teams (the girl's highest finish at this meet). Their score was 102 points. Leading the way was senior Morgan Bridgewater 3rd, followed by sophomore Nicole Clover 14th, senior Sara MacDonald 26th, freshman Kara Cotter 29th, and junior Reighan Fisher 30th. The girls travel to Walled Lake Central on Tuesday for their next dual meet - Coach John Kababik

Boys Cross Country: This past Saturday the boys cross country team competed against 17 other teams in the West Bloomfield Invitational. We came away victorious!  The guys compiled a mere 57 points with second place being 51 points more.  Garret Zuk ran 16:52 for 2nd place and Scott Neff ran 16:57 for 3rd.  Both of them had tremendous races. In 8th place was Grayson Thomas in 17:13. Craig Dudley got 17th in 17:29. Ryan Carrigan rounded out the Eagle scores with a 17:41 for 27th place. If you see these guys around, tell the great job.

Gymnastics: A student and parent information meeting for the Huron Valley Milford/Lakeland Gymnastics Team will be held on Tuesday Oct. 4, 7 p.m. at Bounce Hartland Sports Center, 2755 Arena Dr., Hartland, MI 48353. This is an informational meeting that will explain tryouts and team guidelines for the 2011-2012 Milford/Lakeland Huron Valley Gymnastics Team. Anyone interested in trying out for the gymnastics must attend this meeting. There will be no walk ons after the tryouts.
