Local Student Wins Third Annual 1-800-Hansons Sing-A-Jing Contest

Sarah Nelson, a student at Country Oaks, was awarded a $5,000 savings bond for college and a $500 gift certificate to Toys R Us.

Sarah Nelson, 10, wowed audiences at a recent Huron Valley School Board of Education meeting singing her rendition of the 1-800-Hansons jingle. Her version of the song won the third annual 1-800-Hansons Sing-A-Jing competition and a visit from Hansons Window owner Brian Elias.

"She was absolutely thrilled with the college savings bond and is super excited to visit Toys R Us with her friend — they are picking out a toy to donate," said Heidi Nelson, Sarah's mother, of the prizes. "We appreciate the whole experience."

In addition to Sarah's $5,000 college savings bond and $500 gift certificate to Toys R Us, $2,500 was donated to her school, Country Oaks Elementary in Commerce, to use to buy materials for the classrooms. All prizes were presented at a school assembly Jan. 11.

"It's always fun to go to the school to see the kids' enthusiasm," Elias said. "They have so much talent and imagination, it's wonderful to make an impression."

The 1-800-HANSONS Sing-A-Jing contest generates applicants from throughout Michigan and Ohio every year, according to a press release from the company. To enter, students submit a two-minute video of their version of the 1-800-HANSONS jingle, and the video with the most votes wins. Voting is open to the public.
