School Board, Community Reacts to Huron Valley Superintendent's Departure

A Board of Education meeting will be held Tuesday, Feb. 21, to discuss the process of replacing outgoing Superintendent Jackie Johnston.

Earlier this week, the Huron Valley School District announced Superintendent Jackie Johnston would be leaving the district. Now, the Board of Education has scheduled a special meeting to discuss the process for replacing Johnston.

The meeting, to be held Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at Lakeland High School, will be an opportunity for the public to hear more about the transition process and hiring process the district plans to put in place.

Board President Sean Carlson said Johnston has done a great job at Huron Valley, and helped to build a solid foundation for the next Superintendent.

"Much of what we've accomplished the last several years is a tribute to Johnston's leadership and our staff. It will be a big loss, but I am confident we will attract some very qualified candidates," Carlson said.

One of the newest members of the board, Jeff Long, said, "In my brief time on the board, and during any other involvement with the district, whether we were on the same side or opposite sides of an issue, I always felt that Jackie was doing what she believed was best for our students. L'Anse Creuse has made a fine selection. I personally want to wish her good luck"

Johnston was selected Monday night by the L'Anse Creuse School District as its top choice for their Superintendent Vacancy. In a statement released Tuesday, Johnston said “Huron Valley is such a special place. It has been my honor and pleasure to work in a community that is so supportive of public education. Huron Valley students are in good hands because they have involved parents, dedicated teachers and an entire school community committed to their success.”

Reaction from the community was mostly supportive of Johnston.

On the White Lake Patch Facebook Page, reader David Mortellaro said, "It is a loss for sure, but not a great loss in my opinion. Jackie did some good things and some things I disagree with. Let's hope for a superintendent willing to make the tough decision and not shy for them."

Another reader, Sharon Keenan, said, "It has been a pleasure working with Jackie on a number of committees and projects over the years. I was impressed with how she listened to parents despite some very tough issues. I will miss her leadership in Huron Valley."
