School Notes: New Administrators, a Spelling Bee and a Board Appointment

Here's a roundup of news from the Huron Valley School District.

Huron Valley Schools Superintendent Jackie Johnston has announced administrative changes in the wake of the of Highland Middle School:

  • Starting with the 2011-2012 school year, Muir Middle School Principal Kevin McKenna will be the new principal at Milford High School, replacing Mike Krystiniak, who is retiring at the end of this school year.
  • Muir Assistant Principal Ron Mango will also retire at the end of this school year.
  • Highland Middle School Principal Martin Lindberg and Assistant Principal Patrick Borg will be the new administrators at Muir in the fall, replacing McKenna and Mango, respectively.

These appointments will be presented to the Huron Valley School Board of Education at its regular meeting Thursday.

Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee

Oak Valley Middle School sixth-grader Marisa Sailus and Muir Middle School sixth-grader Natalie McCormick competed in the Area 7 Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee on Jan. 22 in Fenton.

Marisa finished in first place, and Natalie took second place. As a result, both students competed at the state level of the competition March 5 in Standish.

Natalie lasted 38 rounds to finish as the state runner-up. Marisa placed in the top seven, according to the district. There were a total of 33 contestants, and the competition lasted 3 1/2 hours.

Board appointments

In his first act as Board of Education president, Charles Dittmar has appointed John Knight to the position of vice president.

Dittmar became president after Lisa Blackwell from the position  March 4. She will continue to serve the balance of her term as a board trustee.
